Ever thought about making your Salon Green? We're not talking grass green or bottle green although if you fancy going the whole hog, you could incorporate green into the decor too; it's totally up to you!

We are focussing on eco-friendly aspects in this post; it's somewhat a trend nowadays to try and incorporate greener living, improved choices and more sustainable ways to live and work, and truth be told there is no better time to jump on the bandwagon than now.

So, if you haven't already joined the growing movement of eco-friendly warriors you may wish to give it a go, newer improved changes to your salon could be good for both client and business, so there's nothing to lose and everything to gain.

You may be thinking, all sounds well and good, but where on earth do I start? Well many of us dislike change, that's a given, but the thing is greener living doesn't have to be a dramatic overhaul. You could start by providing your staff with stylish eco-friendly cotton uniforms and make a few other subtle changes here and there, with the possibility of development later on. It's all about the mindset, and usually, once you get into it, things progress naturally anyway.

Here are a few tips to point you in the right direction:

Recycle

So, the best way to make your salon greener is to advance new ways in which things can be recycled and if possible, reused in order to fit the narrative- which is basically reducing waste! Encourage staff to use recycling bins for things such as wastepaper, plastics, glass, etc. Try to cut waste by switching to reusable equipment where possible and switch to post-consumer recycled cups and packaging for refreshments.

Reduce

Focus on ways to make the salon more energy efficient in order to save money as well as going green. Light-emitting diode aka LED are more resourceful as well as durable and ideal for salon use since recessed down lighting in the LED form will precisely direct light to target areas. LED is ideal for nail bars and makeup areas with close up lighting.

Motion sensor lighting can be installed to act upon movement and only switch lights on when it's needed, ideal for busy salons where staff could easily forget to turn lights on and off.

Reduce energy with washing, only wash with full loads. It's better to have extra stock of towels, wraps, flannels, etc. than it is to re-wash regularly due to shortage. Stock up and fill your load before using a washing machine.

Repair

Dripping taps, so annoying and so costly too. It's better to fix it now and save water as well as rates. You may not realise it, but little things like dripping taps are actually contributing to water wastage, which is having a dire impact on the environment, especially when you consider it in vast quantity. It may not be just your salon; it could be tonnes and other businesses and homes all adding to this issue, which can be easily fixed. Also, think about adding "Smart showerheads" to reduce water waste at your hair washing basins.

Revamp

Try out some new products, chemical-free, natural ingredients, sustainable packaging, vegan-friendly, etc. there is a whole new client base out there that you could adhere to, and you may fall in love with these new products too.
