Starting a new job? Diamond Designs Uniforms sat down with Jenny Boyce, manager of The Wicklow Street Clinic in Dublin, who gave her top tips to 'nail' the interview!
If you were hiring somebody new, what would be one thing that would make someone stand out?
In the beauty industry, one thing that would make someone stand out when being considered for a new position would be a genuine passion for the field. While skills and qualifications are important, a candidate who displays enthusiasm for the beauty industry demonstrates a commitment that you really can’t ‘train in’ somebody. It has to be an innate quality.
A passionate individual is likely to have a deep understanding of beauty trends, products and treatments. They keep themselves updated on the latest industry developments, follow influential figures, and actively seek out new knowledge. This knowledge can be valuable to a business in providing insights and staying ahead of the competition.
What would you say is the one thing you SHOULDN’T do in an interview?
Be late! We don’t like to admit it but first impressions count. If a candidate is late, I would worry that they might keep clients waiting for their treatments, would they stress staff members if they are waiting on a treatment room? It's something so simple but it can really show someone’s professionalism and dedication to wanting a position. In saying that, life can also happen! If something happens make sure you communicate with the interviewer. They will appreciate your honesty and communication.
Do you have any tips on how to make a good first impression in an interview?
Dress appropriately: Ensure that you dress professionally and appropriately for the interview. Consider the company culture and dress slightly more formallyl than what is typically expected in the workplace. Pay attention to personal grooming and maintain a polished appearance.
Research the company: Familiarise yourself with the company's products and services. Understand their target audience and their goal as a business. This knowledge will demonstrate your genuine interest and enthusiasm during the interview.
Good communication skills: Communication is vital in the beauty industry. Be articulate, maintain good eye contact, and listen attentively to the interviewer's questions. Express yourself clearly and confidently. This will demonstrate your ability to effectively communicate with clients and team members. Also don’t be afraid to ask if you don’t understand a question, ask for it to be rephrased. Our brains can play tricks on us when we are nervous, and a simple question can catch you off guard.
How would you answer “Why do you want to work in the skin/beauty industry?”
I get asked this question more than you think, from clients. I always have my three main reasons.
Firstly, I suffered very badly with acne as a teenager. It always fascinated me - why I got it and how to treat it. This led me looking more into the industry and the field of skin.
Secondly, I can’t describe the feeling you get when you help someone. I see all walks of life but at the end of the day we are all the same. We are all self-conscious of maybe the hair on our lip, the monthly breakout or even the skin tag we’ve had for years. Knowing that I can help someone’s confidence is the most magical feeling and in my 18 years in the industry it still gets me every time.
Thirdly, I just love it! Everything about it, skincare products, treatments, trends, social media, and everything the industry stands for. The industry is so fast paced, you never get bored – always something new to learn.
Lastly, which Diamond Designs uniform is your favourite?
